History
İzmir is a city on Turkey’s Aegean coast. Known as Smyrna in the past, it was founded by the Greeks, taken over by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. The history of Izmir goes back 8.500 years, and 32 civilizations settled here in the past because of fertile land, favorable climate and a 629 km coastline. Izmir has its position as an economically and socially dynamic city and the fact that it has been a home to many different cultures and religions. İzmir is located at the Aegean coast at about 1 hour distance from seaside resort Çeşme. İzmir is served by national and international flights through the Adnan Menderes International Airport. Izmir has an extensive bus system, a metro and rail system plus a large urban ferry network. The rapid transit metro line running from the southwest to the northeast of the city is very convenient. The city also has a highway to Çeşme, Güzelbahçe, Urla as well as a ring around the city.
